How did you first get involved with Campus Crusade for Christ?
I actually first got involved with Campus Crusade for Christ in high
school. I happened to attend one of the few high schools that had Crusade
staff and a guy named Mark McGoldrick invited me to attend a Bible study he
was leading. During the next few years, I learned a ton about my faith, the
Bible, how to pray, and the importance of letting others in on the good news
of Jesus. Mark loved me unconditionally and did so much to help me believe
in myself. I also saw a healthy Christian marriage for the first time and it
was something I was so attracted to.
When I went off to the University of Arizona, I got involved with Campus
Crusade but after a freshman year of pretty much trying to live what I
thought was “college” life…basically putting God on a shelf and living for
myself by checking out the “party scene.”
What are your roles within Slo Crusade, and what is your vision behind
them?
My primary role is Missional Team Leader. This is basically the new name
for ‘Campus Director,’ which is what my role was called for the past 10
years. This role involves a bunch of different responsibilities, but
essentially, my goal is to give overall direction and care for the ministry.
Along with Jenn Lamb, we lead and shepherd the staff team through personal
discipleship, leading staff meetings and leading development times that help
staff grow spiritually and in their ministry skills. Additionally, I meet
with some of the staff men for discipleship in an effort to help them grow
as followers of Christ and ministers of the gospel.
I also lead (alongside with the other staff) the student leaders in our
ministry. We have Core leaders as well as Ministry Team leaders and Bible
study leaders. I love working with staff and student leaders because they
are the ones who will pouring into the bigger body of the slocrusade
movement. This allows me to really multiply the impact I can have.
I also have the opportunity to teach the Bible at our weekly meetings which
is one of my favorite things to do. I love studying God’s Word and finding
out the true meaning of the text and then taking that understanding and
communicating it to a college-aged audience in relevant and challenging
ways. I love helping students who don’t know much about Christianity come
into a real understanding of Who Jesus is and what He did for them.
A few other things I do is help coach the Greek Ministry student leaders who
are serving in the fraternities and sororities on campus, lead summer teams
overseas, and help give direction to the Swanson Center, our study center
and library.
Of course, the campus needs money to do the things we do! So I do spend some
of my time connecting with churches in our area, as well as other community
people and parents, to let them know what God is doing at Cal Poly and
Cuesta and how they can partner with us financially.
Why should we hang out?
We should hang out sometime because I love getting to know the students
who are involved in our ministry. Some of the questions I love asking
students are: How has God been moving in your life? What do you like about
slocrusade? What are some things you would like to see changed? How can we
communicate the gospel in a sensitive and relevant way? I also like hearing
the story of students and the journey the Lord has brought them through.
Additionally, I love sharing about what the Lord has done in my life and how
I have seen Him move over the years. He has done some awesome things, as
well as some challenging things. I have learned a lot about Him and myself
through all of it. I love to pass this on to others and to show what a good,
all-wise God He really is!
We should also hang out if you happen to like any of the following: surfing,
mountain biking, working on my house and my old 1962 Rambler wagon. And it’s
more fun to do this stuff with other people! I also have a cool family and a
wife that loves to have people over to our house. So shoot us off an email
and invite yourself over! Seriously.
What is your current obsession?
I probably obsess most over my wife, Gretchen, because she is so stinkin’
amazing and beautiful and fun to hang out with! I also obsess over my kids
for the very same reasons. Besides them, I can get a little too into the
stuff I wrote about above: especially surfing, mountain biking, and my
wagon. The cool thing is that Gretchen pretty much understands these
periodic obsessions…well, except for the wagon. Weird, huh?

How did you first get involved with Campus Crusade for Christ?
I got involved in Crusade because I met this guy at freshman orientation named Jamey and he told me to check it out. So I did, and of course there was a Bible study in my dorm, and the rest is history….
What are your roles within Slo Crusade, and what is your vision behind them?
Because Jamey and I have 2 kids in tons of activities, most of my roles are behind-the-scenes and things I can do at home. I do our family blog and newsletter, the regional moms’ blog, and proofread/edit all kinds of things for different people. I help train interns and new staff. I lead the 5th-year women’s study and teach from time to time at the Well. I help to process summer project, stint, intern and staff applications. I help out with the Swanson Center and do occasional speaking at the weekly meeting, or women’s events, or retreats. Perhaps my favorite job is taking care of one Jamey Pappas and praying for him and for all of you guys
Describe a typical day.
Typical day? Hee hee! I get up around 6, get everyone off to school, then go running or to the gym, then do work on the computer or at home or on campus (different every day) until about 2, when I become my kids’ chauffeur. Throw in some farmer duties (chicken coop cleaning, wood chopping, etc), some dinner-making, some housework (not too good at that one) and a million errands, and that’s my day! One thing I always try to do that a friend recommended years ago is taking an hour for lunch, where I re-focus on God, pray, read, etc. Oh yeah, if there’s a baseball game on the computer, I’m probably listening to it while I do everything else.
Why should we hang out?
We should hang out because I am just so dang cool! I’m just kidding. But I do love having people over and I can make some delicious baked goods. Or if you come for dinner I’ll make sure you have a nice balanced meal with veggies and I can give you some mom-ish advice if you need it. And I know every coffee place and deli in the county. And you should especially come over if you like sporting events, agriculture, books, cooking, or talking about Jesus, because those are things I love to talk about!
What Biblical character has impacted you recently?
I just finished a Bible study on Esther that was really great, because she was a fairly ordinary woman (girl, really) who was placed by God into some extraordinary circumstances and had to walk totally by faith. And God used her in some really amazing ways.
What is your current obsession?
Getting ready for baseball season, the baby lambs and goats in my neighborhood, trying new recipes from ourbestbites.com, and trying to learn to use my new mac.

How did you first get involved with Campus Crusade for Christ?
I came into Cal Poly as a Freshman and just like every other Freshman,
went through WOW week. During SLO Bound, I filled out one of those cards
to get more information about Campus Crusade and a few days later, Kevin
Lamb came knocking at my dorm door. Within a week, I had been plugged
into a Bible study and gone to my first weekly meeting with SLO Crusade.
During the next few years, I continued to grow in my faith, started
leading a Bible study, and discipled a couple of guys. From there, God
decided to call me into full-time ministry and so here I am.
What are your roles within SLO Crusade, and what is your vision
behind them?
One of my biggest roles with SLO Crusade is through Bible study and
discipleship. I currently lead a Bible study of 13 Junior guys and
disciple quite a few of them. This is by far, my favorite aspect of
doing ministry with Campus Crusade. God has given me such a heart for
the discipleship process and the growth that can occur by simply taking
time with people and pointing them to Christ. Now that these guys are
Juniors, they are also starting to lead Bible studies and disciple guys.
This process of spiritual multiplication where the guys that I lead are
now leading others is truly amazing! I can’t wait to see their guys
leading Freshman as well! Besides the roles of discipleship, I am also
doing SLO Crusade’s finances along with Steve Cairns. Even though this
is a lot of administrative work, it is really cool to be able to give
donors an idea of what God is doing through the money that they give.
Why should we hang out?
Well my first thought was because I’m amazing, but that sounds a little
conceited. And now that I think about it, answering this question seems
like I’m going into a dating service, so I like long walks on the beach
and Italian restaurants. In all seriousness, I love to talk about my
Savior and the grace that He has shown me. I always seem to turn the
conversation into a spiritual one and will probably challenge you in
something before the end of it. God has just done such a great work in
my life that I love talking about it with others and seeing what He has
done in their lives. I also love going to Montana de Oro and hiking
around near the water and up in the mountains. In fact, two summers ago,
I hiked from one end of Montana de Oro to the other over the course of
several trips. Also, I love drinking milk (like 1/2 gallon a day).
What Biblical character has impacted you recently?
I have always been amazed by the life of Paul. I think it is primarily
because Paul seems to be a very action oriented guy. He is not afraid to
take every opportunity around him and bring Christ into it. This has
always been a challenge to me which is probably why I look up to him so
much. But more than that, he trusts God with an amazing faith. He
doesn’t just share the Gospel or help build others up because he has the
skill to do so, but he trusts that God will do the work. I am definitely
a person who thrives on the doing side of our faith, but so often, that
means that I leave God out. Looking up to Paul in this way has inspired
me to really think through what I am doing to see if I’m really allowing
God to be at work through me.
What is your current obsession?
Well, in order to understand my current obsession, you must first know
that I have been playing the piano for 14 years. I have always liked
playing music that someone can sing along to, therefore I love worship
and yes, opera. For the last couple of years, I have been playing songs
from “Phantom of the Opera,” but my current obsession is with songs from
the play “Wicked.” From that play, “Defying Gravity” and “Popular” are
my favorites. I hope to see the play before it leaves San Francisco in
June, so let me know if you want to come!
