The Word of God

images“This is common. A famine for the Word of God. Even now, most Christians do not have their own Bible…When my father was taken to jail, his sewn-together Bible was confiscated and destroyed. Besides his, there was only one other Bible in the church. The owner tore out all 66 books and entrusted a few to each church member. Usually the pastor would have one or two of them bring the needed book, so as to not endanger the entire Bible. But once a year he would have all of them bring their Scriptures. My mother had been given the book of Romans.

One weekend she was very sick. Mother said, “I must go to church. If I do not go, part of God’s Word will be missing.” But she was so sick. Finally she handed me the book of Romans. She said, “Take it; guard it – nothing is more precious.” I felt in awe of being entrusted with something so important. Yet in school I was taught there was no God, that the old Christians were fools..Now the Bible is as precious to me as it was to them…

We make copies now, of the printed Bibles, so more can have them. As we copy, the words of Yesu are written on our hearts. Mother copied it carefully. She would borrow a Bible whenever she could. She’d work for hours by candlelight, praying the words aloud as she copied…Often she would rest her head on it. Sometimes she would giggle with delight. It was a labor of love. Months, even a year, went by when she had no Bible to copy. It took her eight years to finish her whole Bible. Six months before she died, Mother finished copying the final book.”

excerpt from “Safely Home,” by Randy Alcorn. Page 72, 128-129.

I’ve been reading this book to help me understand a place I get to go this summer, much like this place. More than learning about a culture though, I’m understanding a heart for God. And mostly, the treasure, real treasure, God’s word is, because in it you find God Himself.

Not everyone has the freedom we have in America to know God, but maybe they’re better for it. I think I’ll start copying my Bible, to have the words written on my heart, praying when I get my hands on it, I’d understand the privilege it is to have it and respond with this kind of sweet adoration…

A million meals for a million people in Haiti!

15052-promo-graphic-1In just a few weeks, college students from across the nation will gather during their spring break to share their faith.

But they need your help putting their faith into action.

A million meals for a million people!
These students want to assemble more than 1 million meals for desperate victims of the Haiti earthquake who continue to endure unimaginable suffering. Attached to each meal is a clear gospel message in their language to help reach them for Christ.

Now here’s where you come in. Incredibly, each meal and an explanation of the gospel in Haitian Creole costs just 30 cents each! That means your generosity will have a huge impact . . .
• $27 will reach 90 quake victims
• $54 will reach 180 quake victims, and
• $102 will reach 340 quake victims

Your gift now will show Haiti quake survivors that God loves them, cares about their suffering and wants them to come to know Him personally.

So please help by sending a gift now. Thank you!

More faithful than the sunrise

sunriseA couple of weeks ago some friends and I headed up to Sierra Summit for a whirlwind ski/snowboard trip.  It wasn’t you ordinary ski trip, because the Sierra Nevada had just received eleven feet of fresh powder.  Remember when it rained for six days straight in SLO?   That translated to loads of snow in the mountains! Needless to say, we were anxious to hit the slopes after an epic snowfall.

In order to get the most of our day on the mountain, we left SLO at 4:30 in the morning. My brother Pete braved the early morning darkness and drove us off into the black fog of the valley.  After nearly three hours of riding in the car, the sky started to brighten.  We were in the foothills on the eastern edge of the central valley at this point, and I began to make out the jagged teeth of the mountains to the east as the sky grew more rosy.  All at once, with a blinding brightness, the sun burst out from behind its mountain hiding place and our car was filled with golden beams of light.  The power and warmth of the sun blew me away.  Someone was thinking quick enough to snap this photo of the sunrise from the back seat.  It’s a sweet photo, but it really doesn’t capture the glory of the early morning light show.

As my friends and I sat in the glow of sunlight, I started thinking, The sun rises like this every day.  I may not be awake for it, but its always here.  Every single day, whether we see it or not, the beauty of the sunrise exists. As I wondered this simple idea of the faithfulness of the sunrise, the Holy Spirit whispered truth into my heart.  That same week I had been meditating on Psalm 138, thanks to a suggestion from Misty Zeller.  The last verse (verse eight) of the Psalm speaks of the overwhelming faithfulness of God, saying

“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;

your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.

Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

In the same way that I can expect the sun to rise each morning, the love of the Lord is steadfast.  Unlike the sunrise, the Lord’s love will endure throughout eternity!  I never doubt that the sun will rise in the morning, but often I find myself doubting the faithfulness of God’s love and care for me.  The Holy Spirit used this sweet morning experience to gently remind me of his great love.  Most mornings I’m not even conscious of the sunrise.  Sadly, most mornings I’m equally unaware of God’s faithful love and care for me.  Every single day (even on the really awful days) God’s love is more real than the sunrise, but I go about my day without even acknowledging this great truth.  Check out Lamentations 3:21-24 for more on this truth.  I’m sure that if we could “see” God’s love it would be far more beautiful and breathtaking than a winter sunrise.

If I sat in awe of the beautiful sunrise, how much more would I be compelled to stand in awe and thanks of God’s love as I take it in each day?pow fest

The remainder of the day on the mountain with good friends was so much fun, but what I will remember the most from this epic powder day is the reality that we can rest in God’s changeless character.  I am overwhelmed by his goodness and love.

What is Slo Crusade doing at Cuesta College?

cuestaI  have really been enjoying working with the Cuesta Community College. Four years ago our only presence on that campus was a men’s bible study, now we have about 60 students involved. It was so fun to be part of a recent planning time with a leadership team of 15 students for the up coming semester of how to reach Cuesta for Christ. We started the semester off last week serving free hot chocolate and a crusade flier taped to the cup while it was pouring rain. This made the hot chocolate very popular. Please continue to pray with us, as our students really feel God is telling us to focus less on socials and more on reaching the campus with the Gospel and prayer.
